American Cancer Society-North Shore Regional Office
Nearly everyone has been touched either directly or indirectly by cancer. At this time, about 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women have a lifetime risk of developing cancer. In the state of Illinois alone, an estimated 61,500 people this year will hear the words “you have cancer.” Your local American Cancer Society office provides cancer research to find a cure, educates community members about prevention and early detection, advocacy to enforce laws in favor of health care and patient services to people who live and work in Glenview and surrounding areas.
Efforts have been amplified in all communities to promote greater cancer awareness and education as well as ways to prevent and detect cancer earlier. ACS also played a leadership role in passing Smoke-Free Illinois, a law that will make a major impact on reducing cancer in years to come. The American Cancer Society is proud to say that the survival rate for cancer is at an all-time high of 65%. There are over 14 million cancer survivors alive today.
To fund the programs and services, the ACS North Shore office has several community fundraising events throughout the year. Specifically in Glenview is the Relay For Life of Glenview. Relay For Life is an overnight fun-filled family where participants celebrate survivorship, remember those who are fighting and have fought the cancer battle, and pledge to fight back against the disease. This year’s Relay For Life of Glenview will take place May 30-31 at Glenbrook South High School from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. For more information or to sign up, please visit www.RelayForLifeGlenview.com.
Walk & Roll North Shore is a 5-mile walk or a 10, 30, or 50 mile-bike right through the scenic North Shore. The event takes place Sunday, May 18 with staggered start times. The start/finish is at Harms Woods in Skokie, IL. People are encouraged to stay for entertainment and the closing ceremony following the event.
